Most online cost guides for kitchen remodels are useless because they average a Manhattan brownstone gut and a Boise refresh. Here are real numbers from real Sacramento-area kitchens we have done in the last 18 months.
Cosmetic refresh: $9,000 – $18,000
Paint cabinets, replace hardware, new quartz counter and undermount sink, new pendants, new tile backsplash. No cabinet boxes moved. 1–2 weeks of work.
Mid-range remodel: $28,000 – $48,000
New semi-custom cabinets in same footprint, quartz counters, full tile backsplash, new appliances coordinated, new lighting, new flooring. 4–6 weeks.
Full remodel with layout change: $48,000 – $75,000+
New cabinet layout (often removing a wall to open to the living room), island addition, full plumbing and electrical rough-in changes, new appliances, new flooring. 6–10 weeks.
The line items most estimates leave out
- Permit fees — $450–$1,200 in most Placer County jurisdictions
- Cabinet delivery and installation — separate from cabinet purchase
- Hood vent through-roof — $400–$900 if you don't already have one
- Subfloor leveling — old houses are rarely flat
- Asbestos testing — required before demo in homes built before 1985 ($300–$600)
- Daily dumpster rental — $400–$800 over the project
Get all of these on the written estimate before you sign anything.
